Hyderabad: Top-seed Chanda Rubin of USA has pulled out of WTA Indian Open, scheduled
to begin from Monday.
Following Rubin's pull out, Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina has been given the top
billing in the $ 14,000 prize money tournament to be played at the newly built
Tennis Complex at Lal Bahadur Stadium.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday released the draws at
a simple function where organisers said Rubin has conveyed her inability to
participate as she suffered an injury during the semi-final match in Japan Open.
The other players who opted out from the tournament include Yoon Jeong Cho (Korea),
Jana Kandar (Germany) and Maria Elena Camerine (Italy) while the new entrants are
Akiko Moringami (Japan) and Tzipora Obzilar of Israel, tournament director Krishna
Bhupati said.
Qualifying matches would be held later in the evening to complete the final list of
32 players for the singles and the doubles pairing would be released later, he said.
Following is list of top eight seeds: 1 Clarisa Fernandez, (Argentina), 2
Tamarine Tanasugarn (Thailand), 3 Elena Likhovtseva (Russia), 4 Mary Pierce
(France), 5 Iroda Tulyaganova (Uzbekistan), 6 Christina Valero Torens (Spain), 7
Angelique Widjaja (Indonesia) and 8 Silvija Talaja (Croatia).
