London: Reginald Massey, London-based Indian journalist, poet and writer was
honoured with gold medal by the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) UK, for his
outstanding contribution to the Indian classical dance and music.
The medal was presented to Massey by Indian High Commissioner to UK Ronen Sen at the
IOC function to celebrate India's Republic Day during the weekend.
Speaking on the occasion, Sen asked all Indians to re-dedicate themselves to the
Democratic values, which were inseparable from secularism and social justice.
Accepting the award, Massey, who has authored several books including the 'Music of
India', 'Dances of India', 'India's Kathak Dance: Past, Present, Future' and 'Asian
Dance In Britain', was critical of the lack of "political intent and political
fervour among the youth" today.
He said, "There is a distinct shortage of 'desh bhagats' (patriots) in the whole sub-
continent.
"They (the Indian youth) are going for it and scientific excellence. The concern of
Indian youth is to make themselves a career. The cream of Indian youth is not
interested in politics. They are interested in their career – that is the tragedy."
Balwant Kapoor, freedom fighter and president of the IOC who had undergone
imprisonment for three and a half years during the freedom struggle, said though the
country was making rapid progress what was lacking was a sense of unity among the
people.
"The need of the hour is to maintain unity," he said.
