Defiant Mayawati refuses to review POTA detention
Monday, February 3 2003 14:26 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Sticking to her earlier stand, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati turned down a request of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kalraj Mishra to review her decision of imposing Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) on Udai Pratap Singh, father of jailed independent legislator Raghuraj Pratap Singh.

UP Chief Minister Mayawati turns down BJP's request Mayawati reportedly told Mishra she was convinced that action taken against Udai Pratap Singh was correct as she had documentary proof of the antecedents of Singh.

When contacted, Mishra said he had requested the Chief Minister to review her decision as Udai Pratap Singh was a public personality with political stature.

She has politely refused to have a second look into the case, he said.

Mishra said though he did not agree with her viewpoint, he would not press the matter.

The national leadership has asked Law Minister Arun Jaitley to look into the controversy of invoking POTA on political leaders, Mishra said, adding "we are waiting for Jaitley's verdict".

"Whatever decision the national leadership will take would be binding on us," he said.
