New Delhi: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on February 4 voiced concern over the
growing imbalance in the sex ratio in the country and "injustice" being meted out to
the girls.
"We have not been able to build the society we wanted. Justice has not been done
with girls and boys are getting more importance," Vajpayee said addressing anganwadi
workers from across the country, who called on him in New Delhi.
Even now, many children don't live after birth, Vajpayee said, adding although the
number is reducing, imbalance in the ratio between males and females in some states
is growing.
"Where have the girls gone? The God gives birth to them, but humans don't let them
live and kill them," he said.
Vajpayee said in some sections, there is hesitation even in educating the girls and
underlined that literacy among women was essential for inculcating "good values" in
children.
The government is forming laws to stop such practices and it will succeed but the
feeling needs to improve at homes, he said.
He also said a proposal would be put before Parliament for earmarking some part of
the Madhya Pradesh Local Area Development (MPLAD) funds for anganwadi movement with
an aim of helping in development of villages.
