Bangla deploys additional BDR forces on border
Wednesday, February 5 2003 16:38 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Amidst tension running high on the border with West Bengal, Bangladesh has moved "some reinforcement" of its border guards with Border Security Force (BSF) on February 5 saying its has taken "precautionary measures".

Home Ministry sources said reports reaching here indicated that Dhaka had carried out "some reinforcement" of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on the border where tension has been brewing for the last few days in the Cooch Behar region over illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

BSF Inspector General of Police (Eastern Frontier) said on phone from Siliguri that there were unconfirmed reports that Bangladesh has moved troops from close to the border from peacetime locations.

He said BSF has taken "precautionary measures" and has put its reserves on stand-by.

BDR, he said, had also dug trenches in the Satgatchi region in the last two days.
