Russia can help improve Indo-Pak ties: Musharraf
Thursday, February 6 2003 20:06 Hrs (IST)

Moscow: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on February 6 said Russia was "well- placed to play key role" in resolving differences with India in view of improving relations between Moscow and Islamabad.

"Russia, with long relations with India and now improving relations with Pakistan, is most well-placed to play key role in resolution of disputes and improving relations between India and Pakistan," Musharraf told a news conference briefing on the talks he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 5.

Musharraf, the first Pakistani head of state to visit Russia in three decades, said the Kashmir issue was discussed during the five-and-a-half hour interaction he had with Putin and "there were points of convergence and divergence".

"We did discuss Pakistan-India relations ... obviously, the focal point is Kashmir but we did not get involved in the methodology of its resolution," he said.

He, however, said Putin is in the best position to mediate between India and Pakistan in brokering peace.

"I did thank him for his efforts at CICA summit in Almaty. Unfortunately, a meeting with (Prime Minister Atal Behari) Vajpayee failed to take off, because of not me," Musharraf said, adding Putin has promised to remain engaged in South Asia peace efforts.
