Tamarine beats Iroda to win Indian Open, takes revenge
Saturday, February 8 2003 19:33 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: In a sweet revenge for the loss in the final of the Busan Asian Games, second-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand outplayed Iroda Tulyaganova (Uzbekistan) in straight sets to win the WTA Indian Open on Saturday.

Tamarine, who won 6-4, 6-4 at the Lal Bahadur Stadium Tennis Complex, got $ 22,000 for her 123-minute effort to beat Iroda, who received treatment in the middle of the match for a sprained ankle problem.

It was a replay of the Asian Games final but with a reversal of roles. The Thai made her intentions very clear from the first set which she took displaying authority and craft leaving her rival a mere spectator.

Not to be left behind, Iroda, who became the darling of crowds, pulled the second game in a similar fashion and the battle moved to a higher pitch as the Uzbek started dominating the proceedings to lead 4-2.

Twenty five-year old Tamarine, proved her class by demonstrating what consistency and patience means as she slowly but surely demolished the defences of her rival and levelled the score at 4-4, displaying a fine blend of power packed serves and deft backhands.

Iroda was in a different frame of mind on Saturday and her shots were flying all over or crashing into nets as the second-seed overtook her and bagged the first set in 29 minutes.

The spectators, still supporting Iroda and applauding every small effort of the fifth-seed, were taken aback when Iroda's physio came to the court and tried some medicines apparently for a sprained ankle.

The injury though had no effect on Iroda's game as she displayed some classic shots to level the score 2-2 signalling a fierce battle ahead.

Amidst double faults, erratic returns and flat-footed response from both sides, the score levelled at 3-3 and 4-4 but that was all that Iroda could do as the beaming Thai, who reached the last four stage at Wimbledon on a couple of occasion, simply settled the issue without any further damage.

Iroda, who got $ 12,000 for the second slot, would be playing the doubles finals later.
