Srinagar: With the arrest of six top militants from various parts of Kashmir, Jammu
and Kashmir police on February 8 claimed to have neutralised pro-Pakistan Jamiat-ul
Mujahideen outfit in the valley.
Based on the information provided by an arrested militant, Gulzar Ahmad Bhat, during
questioning, police were able to apprehend other top militants, including Abdul
Rahim Rather alias Chacha, Ghulam Mohammad Dar alias Mama, Mohammad Yousuf Baba,
Khursheed Ahmad Khan alias Sofi and Mushtaq Ahmad Mir alias Moulvi, inspector
general of police K Rajindra Kumar told reporters.
All six were top commanders of the outfit and with their arrest, the organisation
has almost been neutralised, he said.
Kumar said police got the first breakthrough when it was able to fix the identity of
Bhat and close watch was kept on his activities, which led to his other
associates.
The arrested ultras were involved in several cases of improvised explosive device
(IED) blasts targetting security forces, in which several jawans were killed or
injured, he said, adding a large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered on
their tip-off.
When asked if the militants would be charged under the anti-terror Law Prevention of
Terrorism Act (POTA), Kumar replied in negative, saying they were involved in cases
of murder and hence will be charged under section 302 and the Illegal Arms
Act.
Asked if there would be a drop in violence in Kashmir valley with these arrests,
Kumar said this module of the Jamiat was finished. "But they would raise another
module. It is in the plan of the militant outfits not to allow the violence levels
to drop," he said.
However, Khursheed Ahmad Khan's arrest is considered to be the back-break jolt for
Jamiat as he was responsible for arranging the finances for militant
activities.
