Srinagar: Three Army personnel, including a major, and an unidentified militant were killed in an encounter in Pulwama district on February 7 night, defence sources said.

Major Yasheen Achariya, signal man Babar and soldier Umesh Singh of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles were killed in the day-long gunfight with militants, who were hiding in Gunchoo village of Shopian area in the district, they said.

Militants fired at security forces, who cordoned off the area on February 7 morning following a tip off about the presence of some terrorists there and asked them to surrender, the sources said.

In retaliatory firing one militant, probably a foreigner, was also killed, they added.
