Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDF) leader Shabir Ahmad Shah
was taken into preventive custody by the police on February 10 while leading a
protest march to the UN observers' office in Srinagar, official sources said.
Shah was detained at Dalgate while he was leading a group of over 100 people to the
UN office in violation of prohibitory orders which is in force in the city, the
sources said.
In the referendum addressed to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, a copy of which was
distributed among the journalists, Shah asked the global body to persuade the Centre
to return the mortal remains of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder
Mohammad Maqbool Bhat to Kashmir, for whom a grave has been kept empty at Eidgah
graveyard.
Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged in 1984 for killing of Indian diplomat R Mhatre in
London, is buried in Delhi's Tihar jail.
