Nagpur: Nagpur police has arrested 25 persons for their alleged involvement in
running a cricket betting racket for the ongoing World Cup at South Africa.
The police also recovered from them huge material including stationary, colour
televisions and four mobile handsets late February 10 night, police said on February
11.
The crime branch sleuths conducted simultaneous raids at five places in different
parts where betting for the February 10 New Zealand-Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe-Namibia
matches was in progress, additional commissioner of police (crime) Babasaheb Kangale
said.
The bookies were accepting betting on mobile phones and the amount may run into
several lakhs of Rupees, he said, adding the police were keeping a vigil on the
activities of some suspected persons involved in the betting racket in the busy
commercial areas in city.
Offences under section 4 and 5 of Gambling Act have been registered against them,
Kangale added.
