FIFA to control National Football League dope tests
Thursday, February 13 2003 22:30 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: World football apex regulatory body FIFA would directly control the dope tests expected to begin in the National Football League by the end of this month.

The entire kit for the tests would be supplied by FIFA from its headquarters in Zurich, Asian Football Confederation medical committee member Dr Nishith Ranjan Chowdhury told.

He said the kit, which included papers as also the sample collection equipment, would arrive in India in the next few days.

Chaudhary, a sports medicine expert, said that the issue was deliberated upon at the AFC medical committee meeting at Penang in Malaysia on January 26.

"FIFA has laid down in clear terms that the entire process would have to be strictly on the lines of the procedure followed in top international events like the World Cup," Chowdury, who was present at the AFC meet, said.

The random selection of matches for the tests would be done through draw of lots to be conducted by the Malaysia-base AFC medical committee chairman Gurcharan Singh.

The samples would be sent through the AFC to FIFA, which would select the dope testing laboratories for analysing them.
