New Delhi: Concerned over the plight of Kashmiri migrants, National Commission for
Minorities (NCM) will soon constitute a "Kashmir cell" to address and take up the
problems of these people displaced more than a decade back due to militancy in the
valley.
"We have invited some of the leaders of these migrants organisations on February 17
for preliminary talks to get information about other prominent organisations and
individuals representing these migrants," NCM chairman Tarlochan Singh said.
Thereafter, the NCM will convene a full-fledged meeting of these representatives and
experts to select the members of the Kashmir cell, he said adding the cell will have
one member of the present NCM besides V K Dhar, former NCM member and Kashmiri
leaders from these migrant groups.
Pointing out that he had held discussion regarding the interests of these migrants
with Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and state Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed
when he was vice chairman of the previous commission, Singh said the commission
members would also visit the state to hold deliberations with the state government.
The move comes within days of Kashmiri pundits expressing regret over neglecting its
representation in the revamped NCM and wrote to President A P J Abdul Kalam and
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on the matter.
