New Delhi: Opposition plans to bring an adjournment motion on the Ayodhya issue in
Lok Sabha on February 18 to pin the government on its move to seek vacation of the
Supreme Court stay order on a ban on religious activities in the acquired land.
The second working day of Budget session of Parliament would witness the Opposition
moving the motion, sources in Left and other parties said on February 17 night after
hectic informal consultations on the issue.
The move may put several allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a piquant
situation when the motion would be put to vote, Opposition leaders feel.
A dinner meeting of the Opposition leaders convened by Congress president Sonia
Gandhi on February 16 had decided to bring forward such a motion with Samajwadi
Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav saying everything would be done to corner the
government and the Opposition would raise Ayodhya, POTA (Prevention of Terrorism
Act) and Uttar Pradesh issues.
Congress spokesman S Jaipal Reddy had remained circumspect on queries about such a
motion as also its timing.
The Supreme Court is taking up on February 21 a government plea to vacate the stay
on religious activities on the undisputed land in Ayodhya.
