Diphu (Assam): A member of the Assam police battalion commando was killed and another seriously injured in an ambush by ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) militants in Assam's hill district of Karbi Anglong on February 18.

The battalion was on patrol in the remote Nongardon Nepali basi area under Baithalangshu police station when the militants hiding in the thick jungle opened fire from automatic weapons, the police said in Diphu.

The policemen retaliated and in the gun battle one havildar Parameswar Gogoi was killed while another constable injured.

The militants managed to escape into the thick jungles, it said.

Two more battalions of the state police were rushed to the spot for combing operation to track down the militants in the jungle.
