New Delhi: With the threat of a US-led attack on Iraq looming large, Doordarshan on
February 18 announced plans for coverage of the possible military strike.
Doordarshan Director General Quresha told a press conference in New Delhi that the
National broadcaster had "tentatively" decided to send teams to the Gulf from
February 25 for telecasting the developments.
About three teams comprising of veteran journalists like Sayeed Naavi and Chankarsan
Thakur would be deployed for the coverage, he said adding that reporting on Indian
perspective would be the thrust area.
Pointing that the Gulf had a large population of Indians, the DD coverage would
concentrate on their fate and the event of the war.
Two DD channels --DD National and DD India --have a good viewership in the Gulf he
said.
Ha noted that news bulletins in three languages-Tamil Nadu, Telugu and Malayalam --
had been introduced on DD India and bulletins in Gujarati and Bengali would be
introduced soon, keeping in view the substantial population of these people in the
Gulf.
