Mumbai: Unit one of Kakrapar atomic power station (KAPS) of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) in Gujarat has been declared as the best performing pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR) operating across the world.

KAPS-1 has been moved to the first place at the end of 2002 on the basis of its gross capacity factor (GCF) of 98.4 per cent during the preceding 12 months, information exchange programme engineer Dev Turner said in the latest issue of 'Cognizani', the monthly magazine published by Canada based 'CANDU' owners group.

CANDU is a pressurised heavy water reactor group of Canada, equivalent to Indian PHWR.

Pickering-7 at Canada slipped to second position with a GCF 98.1 per cent, Turner said adding, with GCF 95.0 per cent, unit-4 of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS- 4) was moved to the fifth position.

Meanwhile, the average of all the PHWR units world over for the period was 83.3 per cent, Turner added.
