New Delhi: India will reinforce its position on the Iraq crisis at the upcoming Non-
Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Kuala Lumpur, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma
Swaraj told the Rajya Sabha on February 18.
While sharing concerns of Opposition members on a war on Iraq, the Minister said
government was willing for a detailed discussion on the issue, but declined their
demand for a Parliamentary resolution.
She felt any such resolution would bind the government on a situation that was still
evolving.
New Delhi has come out strongly against any unilateral military action against Iraq
and advocated the UN route should be followed for a peaceful resolution of the
crisis.
Raising the issue during zero hour, senior Congress member Pranab Mukherjee said
India's opinion should be properly reflected as the people were worried because it
is going to affect their interest.
Asserting the issue must be solved peacefully and not unilaterally by any country,
he said the people of Iraq had suffered enough.
"I do not know what position India will take in NAM," he said adding India was
committed to the resolution of the UN Security Council.
