Hyderabad: Describing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) as an organ to promote and
propagate Hindu dharma, Kanchi seer Jayendra Saraswathi on February 18 said the
Ayodhya dispute could be solved after the Supreme Court gives its verdict on Centre's
plea on the undisputed land.
Expressing faith in judiciary, the Shankaracharya told reporters in Hyderabad that
the "Supreme" verdict on Ayodhya was due soon and termed VHP, which threatened of
'harsh action' if undisputed land was not handed over for temple, as an organisation
to only promote and propagate Hindu dharma.
Refuting the allegations that the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham was actively involved in
political issues, the Shankaracharya said, "it (Ayodhya) is a religious issue and not
a political one.
It should be solved amicably but first the legal tangle should slowly be cleared one
after the other."
"Our's is a body which also has Muslim representatives and we hope that the tangle
could be cleared after the Supreme Court gives its verdict on Centre's plea to vacate
the stay of the apex court's order banning any religious activity on the 77 acre
undisputed land in Ayodhya," the Kanchi seer said.
On the reported threat of VHP that the Dharma Sansad had set February 22 as deadline
for a decision on handing over the undisputed land, Jayendra Saraswathi said, "it is
the date when the Dharma Sansad would sit to discuss the issue and not a deadline for
anything."
Reiterating that VHP is only meant for propagating Hindu dharma, he said, "We believe
in justice". He also denied that he was speaking on behalf of the Centre or any other
body. "As a religious priest I am doing my duty," Saraswathi said.
