14 extremists surrender before DGP in Andhra

Hyderabad: A former District Committee Member (DCM) of Janashakti group of CPI-ML (Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist) naxals was killed in an encounter with police even as 14 extremists, including 5 women, surrendered in Andhra Pradesh on February 18, police said.

Fourteen extremists, belonging to various frontal organisations of the banned People's War Group (PWG) surrendered before the Director General of Police P Ramulu.

The extremists from PWG, Janashakti and Prathigatana groups, involved in extortions, attack on government properties and murders," gave up the activities due to disillusionment with the extremist ideology, ill-health and food problem in the forest areas", Ramulu told reporters.

The ultras include Banka Srinivas alias Siddiraju, special guerrilla squad member of PWG, Jangaon area, carrying a reward of Rs two lakh and involved in murder of Mandal Praja Parishad member in Warangal District.

Dande Vasantha alias Geeta (16) and Pothakanuru Suvarna alias Swapna, both from Jangaon, worked as couriers and provided food and shelter to Chalpak hills guerrilla squad.

Thoutu Sadiaiah, Rayaparthy Yakantha, Ajunuri Bhaghya (all women), were carrying rewards of Rs 20,000 on their heads, and Durga Laxmi (16) of Janashakti Group surrendered due to ill-health, Ramulu said.

In Karimnagar, a police patrol party spotted former DCM Anil, who was killed in the ensuing encounter with police. A revolver was seized, police said adding Anil had recently surrendered and was on bail.
