Kuala Lumpur: Iraq will apprise the non-aligned countries of steps Baghdad is taking
to disarm and fulfil United Nations resolutions in the hope of winning their support
against a possible US-led attack on it.
Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan will brief the leaders at the Non-Aligned
Movement (NAM) summit, beginning February 24, about the current situation in his
country and the steps Iraq has taken to destroy its weapons of mass destruction and
to fulfil UN Security Council's resolution 1441 on the matter, Iraqi Ambassador to
Malaysia Kais S A Al-Yacoubi told the Malaysian news agency Bernama on February
19.
Iraq was sending a high-power delegation of around 10 senior officials, including
Foreign Minister Naji Sabri who is expected to arrive on February 21, while other
officials will be present for the ministerial meetings beginning February
20.
"Iraq is working on all positions and possibilities to avoid a war," Kais
said.
Taha will also explain impact of economic sanctions on the country which have
resulted in the death of more then 1.5 million Iraqis, specially of children those
were deprived of some of the basic drugs, Kais said.
