Speaker seeks leaders' opinion on state's issues
Wednesday, February 19 2003 15:10 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi on February 19 said he would soon convene a meeting of leaders of different political parties to decide whether matters related to states could be raised in the House.

Joshi observed this after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Kirti Azad raised the law and order problem in Bihar for the second day even as Rashtreeya Janata Dal (RJD) and Communist party of India-Marxist (CPM) protested.

CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee said important issues relating to dalits and women in states could be discussed, but it was not fair to raise the law and order situation in states in the House.

Joshi observed there was no rule for Zero Hour and members were free to raise issues of public importance, but matters related to states should not be raised again and again in the House.

He would have a meeting of leaders of various political parties to take a decision in this regard, Joshi said.

Amid protests from RJD, Azad said there was no law and order in Bihar and asked the Centre to immediately intervene.

There is no option but to impose President's rule in Bihar, he demanded and suggested a full-fledged discussion in the House.
