4 injured as ship catches fire near Bhavnagar coast
Saturday, February 22 2003 18:15 Hrs (IST)

Bhavnagar: A big fire broke out in a ship at the Alang ship-breaking yard, near the Bhavnagar coast, on February 22 leaving at least four people injured, official sources said.

"The fire broke out in the engine room of the ship and rapidly spread to the crew- members' cabin, located just above the room, this afternoon," district superintendent of police Anupam Gehlot said.

Four crew-members, present in the cabin, were injured, he said, adding they have been admitted to a local hospital.

The ship had come to the yard two days back and as it was not auctioned as yet, there were no labourers there, Gehlot said.

Fire brigade personnel were battling the flames and senior district officials have rushed to the spot, he said.

However, the extent of damage was not known immediately.
