Oppn wants debate on Ayodhya, disinvestment
Tuesday, February 25 103 16:13 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Major Opposition parties have served notices for discussion in Lok Sabha on the Ayodhya and disinvestment of profit-making PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) under a rule, which entails voting, CPM (communist Party of India-Marxist) leader Somnath Chatterjee said on February 25.

At a meeting of Opposition parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, NCP (Nationalist Congress party), RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) and the Left, it was decided that they would also raise other issues like "misuse" of POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) and farmers' problems at a later stage.

He said the notices for discussion on Ayodhya and disinvestment have been served under Rule 184, which entails voting.

Chatterjee said the entire Opposition supported the demand made by Congress in Lok Sabha on February 25 that Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and HRD Minister M M Joshi, accused in the Babri masjid demolition case against whom CBI had sought permission for starting prosecution, should quit office.

He said the Left and other Opposition parties would hold a 'dharna' in Parliament House precincts on February 26 to show solidarity with the protest by workers belonging to all trade unions, barring BJP-affiliate BMS (Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh), on government's disinvestment policy, employer-friendly changes in labour laws, loss of jobs due to globalisation and other issues.
