Gujarat to enact Law against organised crime
Tuesday, February 25 2003 17:09 Hrs (IST)

Gandhinagar: After the recent crackdown on Godhra carnage accused by invoking Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) against them, the government is planning to enact Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) Act in the Budget session of the Assembly that commenced on February 25.

"The state has taken stern detention measures like POTA and Prevention of Anti Social Activities (PASA) to control the anti-national and criminal activities by miscreants. Now the Centre has given a go-ahead for enacting GUJCOC," Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari said in his address to the House on the opening day of Budget session.

Stating that the government was committed to safety of people, he said the implementation of the Act will provide "safe legal cover" to deal with elements engaged in organised crimes.

The state government is taking all the necessary steps to check cross-border terrorism, anti-state activities and smuggling of narcotics and fatal weapons, Bhandari said.

The Governor said the government is actively considering modernisation of the administration of prisons through video-conferencing system at central jail of Ahmedabad, as also providing sophisticated weapons and vehicles to police force apart from the latest training being imparted.
