Tight security for Godhra anniversary bandh
Wednesday, February 26 2003 17:18 Hrs (IST)

Vadodara: Security has been beefed up in Godhra town in adjoining Panchamahal district of Gujarat in view of bandh and a condolence programme by the Shiv Sena on February 27 at the railway station, where 59 Ramsevaks were burnt alive on February 27 last year, police said on February 26.

A company of border security wing of Home Guards and three companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the town, police said.

Fifty-nine Ramsevaks were burnt alive and 43 others injured when the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express was set afire at platform No 1.

About 100 Shiv Sainiks have planned to take out a procession to the gutted coach at the railway station yard and pay tributes to those killed in the gruesome incident, sources said.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has also planned to observe the day as "balidan" divas.

Meanwhile, city police commissioner Din Dayal Tuteja said mobile patrol vans in Vadodara have been directed to keep round-the-clock vigil in the sensitive areas of the city.

Additional police pickets have been set up in the walled city alongwith deployment of special reserve police (SRP) companies, he added.

Joint police commissioner Pritamsinh Thakur said the senior officials were personally supervising the security arrangement.
