6 jawans feared killed in Feb 19 JK avalanche
Friday, February 28 2003 12:09 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: Six Army jawans were feared killed in a massive snow avalanche in Karnah sector of North Kashmir in Kupwara district, official sources said.

The six jawans went missing on February 19 following heavy snowfall in the Kashmir valley and one of them was found dead on February 27, they said.

The jawan, identified as wireless operator Ram Hanuman, was in touch with his base camp for three days after the snow avalanche struck their post, they said.

His body was recovered along with the wireless set, but the rifle he was carrying was incidentally missing, the sources said.

However, the bodies of five others have not been recovered yet and Army officials were expecting a breakthrough on February 28 following some improvement in the weather conditions, the sources said.
