Beijing: China has urged the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to adjust its strategies to
face up to the new challenges posed by globalisation and jointly work to safeguard
the interests of the developing countries.
"We fully believe that with the joint efforts of all NAM members, it will adjust its
strategy in accordance with the new situation, enhance mutual understanding and
trust, strengthen mutual help and support," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong
Quan told reporters on February 27.
Commenting on the just-concluded 13th NAM summit held in the Malaysian capital Kuala
Lumpur this week, Kong hoped it would play a guiding role for the development of
NAM.
"We maintain that the developing countries, in face of multi-polarisation and
globalisation, are faced with challenges," he said, adding China hopes that NAM
would work to safeguard the interests of the developing countries.
China, the largest developing country in the world, participated at the 13th NAM
summit as an 'observer' and was represented by Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Guangya.
China appreciates and supports what NAM has done, Wang said, adding the fundamental
purposes and principles of NAM are still relevant and highly valid in the new
Century.
"Its role in international affairs should be strengthened, rather than weakened, and
the solidarity of its members should be reinforced rather than slackened. These are
an important guarantee for continued growth of the movement," Wang added.
