United Nations: As Iraq begins to dismantle its al-Samoud 2 missiles as demanded by
the United Nations on March 1, UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix described the
decision as a "significant piece of real disarmament", but an unimpressed US said it
wanted complete disarmament and a regime change in Baghdad.
Blix said the Iraqi decision to allow destruction of missiles is a "very big chunk
of things".
"The Iraqi side at the present time is very active, I'd say," Blix told reporters on
February 28. "And we'll see next week what I'll report in addition to the written
report."
"Of course as reality changes, my report changes. Today (March 1) they have been
digging quite a lot in the ground, they have dug out bombs, fragments of bombs,
bottom plates of bombs, which are being counted and this is too early to say what
the result is, but there's a great deal of activity, that's true," he said.
However, US described the Iraqi actions as "deception" and "false propaganda wrapped
in a lie".
