Sunday, March 2 2003 15:48 Hrs (IST)

Kohima: The jubilant Nagaland People's Front (NPF), the major constituent of Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), on March 2 demanded immediate stepping down of the S C Jamir-led Congress government in the state accepting the ''people's verdict for a change'' in the just concluded Assembly elections.

"Jamir has no moral right to continue in the power as per the Democratic tradition and ethics and he should immediately step down after the Congress faced debacle in the elections," NPF secretary general Chubatemjen said.

Thanking the people for their mandate to the regional party and its partners in the DAN, Chubatemjen described the poll outcome as the "verdict of the Naga people for a change" in the state after suffering in the "misrule" of Congress for the past 10 years.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) North East in charge V Satish told reporters that it was victory for the Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre that brought peace to Nagaland by initiating the peace process.
