Shillong: The Congress, which has emerged as a single largest party securing 22
seats in the 60-member Assembly, is likely to form coalition government with
regional parties like United Democratic Party (UDP) and Meghalaya Democratic Party
(MDP).
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Pranab Mukherjee, who is camping in
Shillong, said his party was in constant touch with UDP and MDP, who had won nine
and four seats respectively.
While asked whether there was possibility to bring Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
also within the fold of government, Mukherjee said, "We have not discussed anything
in this regard."
The UDP general secretary Standlington D Khongwir said his party had discussed with
the Congress for the formation of the government and added as Congress had emerged
as single largest party, naturally the Chief Minister should be from that party.
He said for stability, it would be better to form government with the Congress,
Khongwir said.
The newly elected members of the Congress will elect their Congress Legislative
Party (CLP) leader on March 2. D D Lapang is likely to be the unanimous choice, said
the party sources who did not like to disclose their identity.
