Shillong: Congress Legislature party leader D D Lapang in likely to be invited by
Governor M M Jacob on March 4 to form the new government in Meghalaya, after NCP
(Nationalist Congress party) leader E D Marak failed to furnish a list of his
supporters by the 4:00 pm deadline, Raj Bhavan sources said tonight (Mar 3).
Lapang submitted a list of 38 MLAs to Jacob on March 2 staking claim to form the
government.
Besides 22 Congress MLAs, Lapang also submitted the names of nine legislators of UDP,
four of MDP and three independents.
The swearing in is also likely to be held on March 4, the sources said.
The sources said Marak met the Governor at 10:00 am this morning staking claim to
form the next government. But he was unable to provide a list of his supporters by
the 4:00 pm
deadline given to him.
Meanwhile, a close door meeting of NCP was on at the residence of Purno Sangma, NCP
sources said.
Asked if MLAs of other parties were present at the NCP meeting, the sources did not
comment.
A meeting of the legislators of Congress, UDP, MDP and three independents was also
being held.
