Guwahati: The proscribed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has claimed
responsibility for the February 28 mortar attack on the Air Force station near LGB
International Airport in Guwahati.
The outfit's mouthpiece 'Freedom', quoted in the local press on March 3, claimed
that the mortars partially damaged the mess in the air base.
The insurgent outfit also reiterated that the Centre would have to comply with its
three pre-conditions if peace talks were to be held to resolve the "Indo-Assam
conflict".
The three conditions include that the talks be held abroad under the supervision of
a UN observer.
The mouthpiece also referred to the recent visit of supercop K P S Gill to attend a
tea association meeting, where he had reportedly said that the Assam Accord was
a "blunder".
'Freedom' asserted, "Gill is neither a planter nor a wise politician. The visit
surely had a political motive. But we must make one thing clear that such efforts
will prove futile to stop us."
Meanwhile, following the mortar attack, the Central Industrial Security Force
(CISF), in-charge of airport security, has reviewed its security strategy for the
North East region.
