Shillong: D D Lapang of the Congress was elected as the Parliamentary party leader of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) at a meeting of the newly-elected MLAs of Congress, United Democratic Party (UDP), Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP) and Khnam as well as independents on March 3 night even as Chief Minister Dr F A Khonglam submitted his resignation to Governor M M Jacob.

Lapang is also leader of the Congress Legislature party in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly in which the MDA, comprising Congress (22), UDP (9), MDP (4), Khnam (2) and independents (3), has a strength of 40 MLAs.

Chief Minister Dr Khonglam submitted his resignation on March 3 but the Governor has asked him to continue until the formation of a new ministry, official sources said.
