Tuesday, March 4 2003 17:26 Hrs (IST)

Bhilwara: An idol in a temple was on March 4 found allegedly desecrated in Badnor town, seven kms from Bhilwara, triggering tension in the area, a senior police official said.

The priest of the Shiv temple found the head and ears of an idol of goddess Parvathi broken on March 4 morning and reported the matter to the police, district superintendent of police B L Jain said.

As soon as the word spread, tension gripped the area, as shopkeepers downed shutters and people started assembling on the roads, he said.

Personnel of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary were deployed in the town and the situation was peaceful, officials said.

The incident comes three days after Vishwa Hindi Parishad's (VHP) 'trishul deeksha' in the town, in which tridents were distributed to over 1,000 Hindu activists.
