Patna HC convicts 4 cops for assaulting judge
Thursday, March 6 2003 14:35 Hrs (IST)

Patna: Patna High Court has convicted four police officials including deputy police superintendent S P Mandal in the Sasaram district sessions judge assault case and sentenced them to two months' simple imprisonment.

A full Bench comprising Justice S N Jha, Justice Narayan Roy and Justice R S Garg gave its judgment on March 5 in the case relating to the assault on district sessions judge of Sasaram, Dharnidhar Jha, on January 19, 2002 inside the court premises.

Jha reported the matter to Patna High Court which initiated contempt proceedings against the accused policemen.

Infuriated by an order of Jha which sentenced one of their colleagues to jail in some case, the enraged policemen reportedly shouted slogans against the district and sessions judge before assaulting him.

The other policemen sentenced were sub-inspectors Arun Paswan, Sakaldev Yadav and Sayed Ahmad Khan.

Mandal has been slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 and in case of default he would have to undergo a further imprisonment of three months, the order said.
