Srinagar: Even as Hurriyat Conference, the main separatist alliance of Jammu and
Kashmir, is yet to take a decision whether or not to enter into talks with the
Centre's newly appointed interlocutor N N Vohra, president of Awami National
Conference G M Shah has termed his appointment as an "unfortunate and futile"
exercise.
"Hurriyat Conference will take a decision soon on the question of entering into a
dialogue with the newly appointed government interlocutor, even though no formal
invitation has been received," its chairman A G Bhat said on March 6.
Hurriyat leadership is busy holding consultations in this regard, as the grouping is
not opposed to any meaningful way to resolve the Kashmir issue, Bhat said.
He said Kashmir issue could be resolved only through meaningful and result-oriented
talks.
Vohra, who met state Governor G C Saxena and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in
Jammu on March 5 has made it clear that he intends to hold dialogue with all
parties, including Hurriyat Conference and other separatist organisations.
Meanwhile, G M Shah, who is also a former Chief Minister, said the way to solve the
vexed issue is dialogue, but not through bureaucratic measures.
Addressing his party executive on March 5, he said, "Bureaucratic measures will only
make the issue more complicated than help resolve it. The tragedy is that government
considers Kashmir as an administrative issue, rather than a political one.
Appointment of Vohra is unfortunate and a futile exercise."
