'LF stifling Democracy by filing cases against BJP'
Thursday, March 6 2003 19:32 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: The West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 6 said the filing of cases against its leaders including three party Members of Parliament (MPs) for visiting Dhantala on March 3, the scene of "rob and rape", was a ploy by the Left Front government to 'stifle Democracy'.

Never in the past have cases been lodged against a visiting team, but the "improved Left Front, as they prefer to be called, resorted to such a move to stifle Democracy. We are not afraid of it," BJP general secretary Rahul Sinha told reporters.

Criticising the Buddhadev Bhattacharjee-government, he said if necessary, the BJP would organise a state-wide movement against it and give a call for a 'march to Dhantala'.

The BJP leader also reiterated the demand for a Central Investigative Bureau (CBI) probe into the alleged rape and molestation of women during a murder and dacoity in two buses ferrying guests from a wedding at Aismali village under Dhantala police station in Nadia district on February 6.

He claimed that investigations into the incident by the state police would not be "fair".

Sinha said during a meeting with home secretary A K Deb, the MP team had also demanded a CBI inquiry.

Cases had been lodged against the three MPs Anadi Charan Sahu, Jayashree Banerjee and Bishnapada Roy, for visiting the spot on March 1 in violation of prohibitory orders in force there.
