Shillong: Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) militants ambushed a Border Road Organisation vehicle killing one Army Captain and two jawans and took away Rs 70 lakhs at Rongjeng village in East Garo Hills district, official sources said on March 7.

The militants who were hiding in the jungle opened fire at the vehicle on March 7 and killed Army Captain M M Babu, driver of the vehicle Ganesh Babu and jawan Ramesh Babu and looted Rs 70 lakh meant for salary, the sources said.

The militants also took away two SLR rifles from the deceased.

The militants also ambushed the vehicle of East Garo Hills district superintendent of police S D Sangma who was passing through the same road after a short while.

However, Sangma escaped unhurt. His bodyguards returned the fire, the sources said, adding the militants escaped towards the dense jungle leaving behind a sack of coins.

Immediately after the incident, police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a combing operation but none was arrested so far.

In another incident on the same day and same district, a six-member group of ANVC militants brandishing AK-47 rifles abducted the headmaster of Katuligaon High School Milan Choudhury and another teacher Shekhawat Hussain, the sources said.
