Bhopal: The issue of alleged irregularities in the voters' lists in Madhya Pradesh
rocked the state Assembly on March 7 with Opposition BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)
vociferously demanding resignation of Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, forcing
adjournment of the House for the day.
The House was adjourned twice during press lunch session after BJP members created an
uproar in protest against the irregularities.
When the House met after lunch break, the leader of the Opposition, Babulal Gaur said
the irregularities in the voters' lists amounted to murder of democracy in the
state.
The BJP members, despite pleas by Deputy Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani, refused to calm
down and continued to raise a furore over the issue. They did not allow the
proceedings to take place, forcing Rohani to adjourn the House for the day.
During pre-lunch session, the House witnessed uproarious scenes with Gaur claiming
that the Election Commission (EC) had, in a communication to state Chief Electoral
Officer, cancelled the voters' list in 69 constituencies and asked for re-examination
of lists in the remaining 169 constituencies.
The BJP members claimed that the EC had accepted that there were irregularities
during the preparation of voters' lists in the state. The EC has recommended
disciplinary action against 10 officials responsible for the alleged irregularities
in the voters' list, the members said.
