New Delhi: United States' intention to launch an attack against Iraq poses a threat not only for that country but for the entire Third World, a Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM) member said in Rajya Sabha on March 7.

Moving a resolution on the issue during private members' business, Jibon Roy said, "The Third World should understand that the possibility of a strike against Iraq is not confined to Iraq alone, but this is a war against weak nations, against all of the Third World."

Parliament resounds with anti-war feelings He said, "Anglo-US threat of war against Iraq has endangered not only the sovereignty of a Third World nation, but has also put a question mark on the role of the United Nations."

Participating in a discussion on the resolution, R B S Verma (Bharatiya Janata Party – BJP) said the imminent strike against Iraq is meant to capture that country's rich oil fields and not for the ostensible reason of freeing Iraq from dictatorship.

K Natwar Singh (Congress) said changing the dictatorial regime should be the responsibility of the people of that country (Iraq).

He wanted to know if the government has understood the implications of the Prime Minister's announcement that in case the need arose, the four million Indians in Iraq and other Gulf countries would be evacuated.

Viduthalai Virumbhi (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam – DMK) said Iraq should be given a chance to dismantle its weapons.
