United Nations: Britain on March 7 announced that it is amending the second
resolution to give more time to Iraq to comply with the Security Council resolutions.
Addressing the Security Council after the chief weapons inspectors presented their
reports, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw put up a spirited support for the
position taken by Britain and the United States on Iraqi disarmament which drew
cheers from those present in the chamber at the end of his presentation.
Several times during his address, Straw mentioned French Foreign Minister Dominique
Galouzeau de Villepin by name while refuting the arguments for giving more time to
inspectors advanced by Paris.
It was not the pressure of the international community, Arab League or the Non-
Aligned countries that made Iraq show some co-operation with inspectors but more
than 2,00,000 American and British men and women putting their lives on the line, he
said.
