Bush orders freezing of Robert Mugabe's assets
Saturday, March 8 2003 10:35 Hrs (IST)

Washington: Toeing a tough line, US President George W Bush has ordered blocking all property and economic assets of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and 76 government officials who have "formulated, implemented or supported policies that have undermined Zimbabwe's Democratic institutions".

Bush said Zimbabwe government's actions pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the foreign policy of the United States and has resulted in the deterioration of Zimbabwe's Democracy, breakdown of the rule of law, politically motivated violence and political and economic instability in the Southern African region.

"The Executive Order further demonstrates the US' commitment to supporting Zimbabwe's Democratic evolution, and strengthens our co-operation with the European Union in efforts to promote that evolution," he said.

The European Union had earlier freezed the assets of 79 individuals responsible for the political, economic and social deterioration of Zimbabwe.

The Executive Order issued by Bush also prohibits US citizens or residents from engaging in any transaction or dealing with the targeted individuals.

Blasting the Mugabe regime, Bush said, "Over the course of more than two years, the government has systematically undermined that nation's Democratic institutions, employing violence, intimidation, and repressive means, including Legislation, to stifle opposition to its rule."
