Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Venkaiah Naidu on March 8 called upon
various political parties and state governments to initiate equal rights for women
in property and said this should be done irrespective of religion.
Addressing the Kalpana Chawla memorial 'puraskar' function, Venkaiah said without
the right to property, the empowerment of women was incomplete.
BJP wanted women to be given equal rights not only in political and social front,
but also economic empowerment. "This is possible only if the Law of inheritance is
amended and women are made eligible for equal rights in the property of Hindu
undivided families," he said.
"BJP is firm on political empowerment for women. The panchayat raj institutions have
already started to yield positive socio-political transformation at the grassroots
in women empowerment," he said.
The mandatory provision of 33 per cent reservation for women has enabled more than a
million women to enter political life as elected representatives, he added.
