United Nations: Pakistan on March 7 raked up the Kashmir issue during the Security
Council debate on Iraq while opposing setting a deadline for Baghdad's disarmament.
Towards the end of his presentation, Pakistan's United Nations Ambassador Munir
Akarm accused the 15-member Council of following "double standard". While seeking to
implement its resolutions on Iraq, the Council was ignoring those on Kashmir, he
said.
Walking a tightrope while opposing a war against Iraq and trying not to displease
the US at the same time, Akram said Pakistan opposed any deadline which could lead
to an early war and expressed concerns over the plight of Iraqi masses.
"Pakistan believes that an agreed approach must be evolved through consultation
among Council members and United Nations inspectors."
"The best assurance in success and security in Iraqi WMD (weapons of mass
destruction) disarmament peacefully is the unity of the Security Council," he
noted.
