Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh legislative Assembly on March 10 unanimously adopted a
resolution urging the Centre to expedite passage of the Constitution amendment Bill
providing for reservation for women in Parliament and Assemblies.
Moving the resolution in the House, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed
unhappiness over the delay in adoption of the Bill in the Parliament and favoured a
firm
approach in this regard.
The resolution, supported by all political parties, favoured measures to ensure that
women were provided with 33 per cent reservation in Parliament and legislative
Assemblies.
Without naming any party, Naidu decried attempts by some people to create obstacles
for the Bill and said, "This resolution should serve as an effective measure to put
pressure on such people (opposing the reservation bill)".
Earlier, cutting across party lines, the members favoured measures to see that the
Bill was cleared by the Parliament during the current session itself. Some even
suggested convening of a joint session of the Parliament to pass the Bill.
The members belonging to ruling TDP (Telugu Desam Party), Congress, BJP (Bharatiya
Janata Party), CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen
spoke on the resolution.
