Kolkata: The six constables involved in the New Year's eve murder of Bapi Sen, a
police sergeant, who was allegedly killed by them when he intervened to stop them
from teasing a woman pillion rider on a motorbike, were chargesheeted on March 10.
Chief metropolitan magistrate S K Mishra, before whom the chargesheet was filed by
the detective department of the Kolkata police, transferred the case to the third
metropolitan magistrate for trial.
All the six Reserve Force constables, who are in judicial custody, were charged with
murder (section 302 of Indian Penal Code) and abetment to criminal offence (section
34 of IPC).
The death of the traffic sergeant, who died of his injuries in a hospital after
remaining in coma for six days, had caused a furore over whether the city was safe
for women to travel freely.
People from all walks of life, including the Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee,
had paid rich tributes to the sergeant for his courageous act.
The woman for whose honour Sen gave his life, however, never came forward, inspite
of repeated appeals by the police.
