Centre rejects probe into UP 'tape controversy'
Monday, March 10 2003 21:47 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government on March 10 rejected any inquiry into allegations of misuse of funds from MP Local Area Development scheme even as the entire Opposition staged a walkout in Rajya Sabha demanding the government state in clear terms that no offence was committed with regard to the tape controversy involving Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

"Tape recording is not an evidence. It has to be corroborated just like newspaper reports. There is no question of an inquiry," Satyabrata Mookerjee, Minister of State for Programme Implementation, told the House.

He was replying to a short duration discussion on the alleged misuse of MP Local Area Development scheme arising out of the recent disclosures in the form of videotapes.
