Mysore: A court in Mysore is all set to create a techno-legal history with witnesses
overseas being cross-examined by making use of the audio-visual linkage.
A Mysore-based Non-Resident Indian (NRI) had filed a case against US-based 20th
Century Fox alleging infringement of copyright.
The allegation of the NRI was that the film unit had lifted the script for Hollywood
blockbuster 'Independence Day' which, according to him, belonged to Veda Nayak,
author of the infringed script 'Extra Terrestrial Mission'.
Two defence witnesses, an attorney and another co-writer of 'Independence Day',
pleaded their inability to go over to Mysore. They would be virtually cross-examined
by making use of the modern technology.
The virtual cross-examination is expected to last for three days and the date to be
fixed by the court on March 19.
The time differential between Mysore and Los Angeles, where the two witnesses would
face the court, roughly being 10 hours, is also stated to be convenient for both the
plaintiff and the defence witnesses, and the tele-trial can commence at 11:00 hours
(IST), it is said.
