Wednesday, March 12 2003 11:25 Hrs (IST)

Rameswaram: Forty one fishermen, who had been detained by the Sri Lankan government after they were abducted from mid sea by fishermen of the island nation, were released on March 11 evening, official sources said.

They told reporters that 16 of the fishermen were from Pudukottai district and the rest from Nagapattinam district. They were abducted in February and early March for allegedly crossing the international border and fishing in Sri Lankan waters, the sources said.

Twenty-seven more Indian fishermen are still in the custody of the Sri Lankan government.
